Random takes a whole walnut and turns it in her paws
We only had a couple of weeks to get to know one another...
Random checks out the peanut hanger
Random searches the hedgehog pot for a hidden nut
Random had to learn how to use the squirrel pot,
it didn't take long (a few days, maybe a week).
She wouldn't stand on the base plate at first, but great tail action.
She is lucky to be so tall, not all the squirrels manage to open it
Both Random and Boingy would smell the lid first
Random like Boingy was most wary of the gorilla tripod rather than the camera
Random caches a pinenut in shell
Poor Random nearly chokes on a seed, 15th Oct 2018
A quick recovery
Random picks the whole walnut over the whole pecan
Random swaps a monkey nut for the whole pecan
Random finds another whole walnut
Random smells the hazelnut with walnut in her mouth
Random pops a monkey nut in her mouth with the other nut
I gave Random at least one whole walnut a day, she dropped this one from the pot
Random loved the whole pecans in shells
Pecans were a rare treat
Random finds a monkey nut up high which a magpie had dropped, October 2018
Random finds an unusually long monkey nut
Random fab tail but upset at not finding another monkey nut,
stomps her paws
Random was expecting more monkey nuts
Yay a whole walnut which is always cached first
We've had to squirrel proof the spring bulb pots. They are prone to young squirrels digging in them as they cannot open the nutpot yet.
Tail waving, Random was upset at something as there had been alot of
tail communication
Alert
Foraging on the patio
Random drops a monkey nut for a whole walnut
She did seem distressed or upset today.
Random looking at me through the open window, she's not been this close before
Random pleads for the monkey nut she cannot reach on the windowsill
Random saying farewell.
No idea why they all left, maybe it is an Acorn mast year here.
Or maybe they have all been displaced due to local building in the area
or tree 'maintenance'
Both squirrels who visited regularly are highly intelligent.
They learnt how to open the food pot relatively fast.
They both realised they could close the lid quietly so not to draw attention to themselves.
They are so smart. Boingy and Random have cheeky yet different characters too....
Boingy had a set way of doing things. She became pretty regular visiting a few times a day.
Drink, check the hedgie pot for monkey nut, cache, sit and eat, drink, play/chase (optional), only scooping seeds and smaller items of food at the end, a final drink, one more check inside the hedgie pot, then one last nut to take away.
Boingy always gave me her farewell each evening.
Sometimes going up on the roof to sit and preen or nibble at moss/lichen at dusk before leaving.
Random was well more random, not having so much of a routine like Boingy.
She rarely stayed til dusk. But then we only had a couple of weeks to see what she would do, mostly the unexpected or opposite of what I thought.
